The New Year is only a few days away. People all over the world will be making resolutions to make changes January 1.
It’s not surprising that losing weight and starting an exercise program are two of the all-time top ten New Year’s resolutions made. There aren’t too many people who don’t want to shed a few pounds and get into better shape.
How about you? Have you thought about what healthy changes you want to make?
Unfortunately, making a resolution doesn’t cause the changes to happen. There is a lot of work involved!
Consider these steps to prepare the way for successful change in 2010:
- Write down your top three resolutions and why you want to make them now.
- If you’ve made similar resolutions in the past, try to discover what barriers held you back.
- Make your resolutions very specific – not “I want to lose weight,” but rather, “I want to lose 15 pounds by April 1.”
- Look at practical ways (day to day logistics) of how you’re going to make these changes, such as exactly when you are going to fit exercise in.
- Commit to them by getting the motion started, such as joining the gym or signing up for a weight loss program.
- Ask a friend to be a “friendly” pest and hold you to your resolutions.
- Don’t give up if you are struggling. Everyone falls down, but those who get back up finish the race.
Changes don’t happen because you want them to. (Gee, wouldn’t that be nice.) Changes happen because you plan them to and work the plan.
