So, you want to get sugar out of your daily diet. Well, it’s not too easy, but it certainly can be done with a little effort. And getting sugar out of your diet is totally worth the effort!

Meal times aren’t too difficult when you’re eating lean proteins and fresh veggies. Snacks and treats can be a challenge, however, so here are ideas on how to enjoy tasty, sugar-free eating.

  • Natural peanut butter on apples, bananas, celery, or carrots. Be sure to check the ingredients. Some brands like Jif and Skippy say “natural” on the jar, but there is still added sugar and oil. Look for peanut butter that contains only peanuts and salt.
  • Plain, non fat yogurt. Stir in fresh (or fresh frozen) fruit like blueberries or pineapple chunks. Add a little stevia, Splenda, or agave to sweeten. You can also add a drop or vanilla and a little cinnamon.
  • Hot air popcorn. You can add a little butter and salt, but keep it light. Fresh popcorn with no additives or preservatives is a wonderful whole grain with lots of fiber.
  • Salad dressing. Make your own with olive oil and vinegar as the base. Add spices and extras like lemon juice, mustard, or garlic. You may also want to try squeezing a fresh orange over your salad and adding some pear and apple chunks.
  • Grains. Stick with cooked grains, such as oatmeal, brown rice, whole wheat pasta, and barley. Almost all breads, cereals, and crackers (any products in a package) have added sugar. You can also enjoy baked potatoes or yams.
  • Milkshake. Of course the real thing is loaded with fat and sugar, but you can have a healthy alternative that tastes fantastic! Blend one cup fat free milk with one cup frozen fruit (berries, peaches, banana) with 1 ice cube, 1 tsp. of vanilla, and a little natural sweetener until smooth.
