One of my clients is beginning to train for a 5K. Two months ago she never thought she could do something like this.

Several times a week she goes jogging/walking with a friend for 2.5 miles. Now, she is significantly overweight; her friend is normal weight. “I can’t believe I can run faster and farther than she can,” my client told me. She assumed that because her friend was smaller that she wouldn’t be able to keep up with her. But the opposite was true!

That’s because she is faithful to weight train, jog the track, get on the treadmill and the bike, and push herself a little more each week.

Whoever Thought the Fat Girl Could Run 13 Miles?

by lisagraham | September 14, 2009 | In Mindset Comments Off

Do you remember “the mile” in high school? I do – and painfully so. I was the fat kid who couldn’t run even a quarter of the way. I was huffing and puffing, red in the face, sick to my stomach, walking as fast as I could, but left behind. Everybody else finished way before me. I could see them standing around waiting for me to finally drag myself in.

It made me feel sad and humiliated. I hated running.

No Over-the-Hill Workout for Me

Today at the grocery store I saw an elderly woman pulling a gallon of milk from the shelf. She slid it across the shelf and as soon as it came off the edge, her arm plunged down from its weight. I started to jump toward her. It looked like she was going to drop the jug and be thrown forward. The jug “landed” in the bottom part of the refrigerator case and she was okay.

Immediately the thought came to me: “That’s why we have to strength train.”

What Food Do You Need to Give Up?

When I look back over the years, I realize that I’ve had a love for ice cream from the time I was a little girl. I remember eating bowls and bowls of it. If we didn’t have chocolate, I would add chocolate syrup to vanilla ice cream and stir it in until it became chocolate ice cream “soup.”

I well remember going to one particular cousin’s house for a delicious treat. My aunt would sometimes allow us to make banana splits. She had all the fixings and big, round bowls to eat from.

One Chance to Lose Weight

by lisagraham | March 25, 2009 | In Mindset Comments Off

Recently, a past client came back to start training with me again. She gained quite a bit of weight back in the months since I’ve seen her and she feels very badly about it.

When we first started talking, it seemed like she was fighting the accusations failure often bring: It’s all over for you. You messed up. You totally blew it. You’ll never be able to do it again.

I put my hands on my hips and said, “Who’s to say we have only one chance to lose weight?”
