10 Ways to Make Dining Out A Diet Disaster

by lisagraham | February 5, 2010 | In Food Comments Off

Want to go out this weekend and totally blow your diet? It’s easy. Follow these tips:

  1. Don’t bother to check the restaurant;s website for nutritional information.
  2. Go to dinner famished.
  3. Get a bread basket.
  4. Start off with appetizers.
  5. Assume anything chicken or seafood is good for you.
  6. Don’t ask for the salad dressing on the side.
  7. Drink soda or cocktails instead of water.
  8. Clean your plate.
  9. Peruse the dessert menu “just” to see what they have.
  10. When the server asks if you want dessert, hesitate and think about it.

Does this sound ridiculous to you? That’s just how ridiculous it is to go out to dinner without planning ahead. You know the old saying: “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”

We all have times when we crave a little “bad” food. Sometimes we can shrug it off; other times it’s like trying to hold down a monster.

It may be better to give in a little and curb your craving. This can ward off an all-out binge. Here are some little food “sins” you can indulge in from time to time to help you feel satisfied and not deprived.

Skinny Cow ice cream treats
Weight Watchers desserts

Surviving Thanksgiving Dinner

by lisagraham | November 25, 2009 | In Food Comments Off

I love Thanksgiving. It’s so restful for me because we go to my mom’s house for dinner. I don’t have to mega clean my house or cook a huge meal. She wants to make everything herself and is only “allowing” me to bring a dessert.

I get to go into the gym in the morning and have a kick-butt workout. (The goal is to burn at least 800 calories.) Then I can put my feet up and catch some of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on TV before we leave.

We took a family walk today and enjoyed the cool, crisp air of autumn, the golden sun, and the colored leaves. There was something about being outdoors that made me hungry for baked apples. When we returned, I immediately began peeling and slicing apples for a healthy version of apple crisp.

Fall is such a great time to enjoy the many varieties of apples. I love to try all different kinds to experience the flavors and crispness (not to mention their delicious aromas). I enjoy using them in many different recipes and usually eat one every day.

Healthy Grilling for the 4th

by lisagraham | July 2, 2009 | In Food Comments Off

Are you celebrating the July 4th holiday with friends… and burgers on the grill? Well, you can have a great party and keep it healthy!

There are many options to make your menu tasty while keeping the fat and calories down. Here are some things to keep in mind.

  • Meats: look for lean cuts of beef, extra lean hamburgers, skinless chicken or turkey breast, lean turkey burgers, turkey hotdogs, and soy burgers.
  • Rolls: whole grain rolls offer more fiber and nutrition. If you have picky guests, you may have to offer whole grain and traditional white buns.
  • Sides: instead of calorie-laden pasta salads serve fresh veggies with dip, a fruit tray, baked potatoes or baked fries, corn on the cob, and low sugar baked beans.
  • Condiments: switch to low calorie, low sugar mayo, ketchup, and barbeque sauce. Try using dry spice rubs on your meats or marinating them in fat free Italian dressing. Mustard is always a good choice because it has no fat and very few calories. Use low fat cheese and nonfat sour cream.
  • Dessert: let your guests choose any mix of fruits they like, put them in the blender with a scoop of nonfat vanilla frozen yogurt, and a little nonfat milk for a delicious milkshake. Or make a sundae assembly line with frozen yogurt, lite chocolate syrup, fat free Reddi Wip, and cherries.
  • Drinks: you can add a ton of calories with drinks so try flavored water with lemon and lime wedges, or low cal drinks like Fuze Slenderize and Propel.

Portion Control for Calorie Control

by lisagraham | June 30, 2009 | In Food Comments Off

I’ve noticed how my thin friends take small, just-enough portions of food. They don’t overeat and rarely indulge in sweets or desserts.

Then I’ve noticed how my overweight friends and relatives take generous portions. They eat till they’re stuffed. Then they enjoy dessert and treats.

When you realize that weight loss/gain comes down to calories in and calories out, it’s easy to see how portions affect what you weigh.

Have Your Guests Bring Dessert

by lisagraham | June 22, 2009 | In Food Comments Off

I’ve already learned that having dessert in my house spells disaster. Unless I make something I don’t like, which is kind of difficult considering we’re talking about dessert!

So when my friend asked what she could bring over for our cookout last night, I told her dessert. There are several pluses to this. 1.) She made it at her house. No being tempted to lick the bowl, the spoon, the container…or test it to make sure it was “okay.” 2.) I could look at it as an outside substance being brought into my house and owned by someone else. I viewed it as hers not mine. 3.) All the dessert leftovers went home with her. No delicious morsels left in my fridge or cupboard to call my name all night.

My second line of defense was to enjoy diet mocha while everyone else slurped and smacked down their ice cream pie and cookies. Thank God for diet hot cocoa mix.

Have you ever watched a TV commercial for pizza? The cheese bubbles, the crust glows golden, and you can nearly smell the aroma. Suddenly your mouth is watering and you’re craving pizza like crazy! Maybe you even call up the local ristorante for a delivery.
