Cupcakes and Cookies on my Counter

by lisagraham | July 13, 2010 | In Food Comments Off

I babysat several kiddies yesterday so my mom wanted to be a help by bringing some food over. This included a plate of icing-covered cupcakes and a bag of homemade cookies. She placed them on my counter for easy access.

I had to look at these things all day. I had to handle them and serve them to the children. And I had to NOT eat them!

Why People Gain Weight Back

by lisagraham | May 18, 2010 | In Mindset Comments Off

There are probably hundreds of reasons why people gain weight back after they’ve worked so hard to get it off. But I think most reasons can be whittled down into one main theme.

They never truly internalize their external changes.

What does this mean? Well, think about all the things people do to lose weight – stop eating cookies and ice cream, give up soda and McDonald’s, start exercising, cook more at home, take food and water everywhere they go, etc.

Avoid Food Triggers

So I’m sitting in church and suddenly have the craving for fresh roasted peanuts. I can imagine smelling them and tasting them. I leaned over and whispered to my hubby, “I’m craving peanuts.” He looked at me funny.

A few minutes later, I smelled a delicious popcorn aroma coming from the kitchen where they were preparing the snack for the kids.  “Mmm, popcorn,” I whispered.

Don’t Let A Lapse Keep You Down

by lisagraham | April 20, 2010 | In Mindset Comments Off

Everyone deviates from healthy behavior at times. It is normal and expected. It can be anything from eating three ice cream cones in one day to eating badly for a whole weekend.

Lapses leave you feeling pretty disgusted – disgusted with yourself for falling off the wagon, and disgusting physically from all the junk in your system.

The key to bouncing back from a lapse is to turn it into a learning experience. Look back and examine: 1) the circumstances, 2) your feelings, 3) your state of mind, 4) the people around you, and 5) your environment.

Pecans and Diet Mocha Save the Day

by lisagraham | December 23, 2009 | In Food Comments Off

There are so many sweets and goodies around my house – and so many people munching, lip smacking, and devouring those sweets – that it’s kind of hard to keep them out of mind. So I’ve had three diet mocha’s today with nonfat whipped topping (I usually have 1 per day). I’ve also nibbled on quite a few pecans (but diet mocha and pecans are better than cake and chocolate!) and these healthy treats have saved my day.

I’m holding out for Christmas Eve. After our 5:00 church service, we come home for dinner then break out the cookies. Now, these aren’t just plain old cookies. My mom bakes dozens of kinds of cookies – fudge puddles, magic bars, pecan tarts, etc. – and she gives us a plate full. So we freeze them and save them for Christmas Eve. We sit on the living room floor eating cookies and watching a movie – this year it’ll be the classic “It’s a Wonderful Life”.

Awakening the Sugar Monster

by lisagraham | December 10, 2009 | In Food Comments Off

Today was not a good eating day for me. I was BAAAAAAAD. Two cookies (my son made them for math to learn how to measure), a handful of M&Ms (I took some when I gave one to the little girl I was babysitting went potty), and half a homemade waffle my mom made (fresh, hot, right out of her waffle iron – the evil contraption).

When I got up today, I knew the waters were going to be rough. I felt very tired physically, plus I felt a boatload of stress on my shoulders. So, emotionally, I was not in a good place. And I felt really hungry first thing when I usually don’t even think about breakfast for two hours.

Healthy Meets Yummy in These PB Cookies

by lisagraham | September 22, 2009 | In Recipes Comments Off

To some people, healthy food means tasteless food. And, yes, if you’re used to sugary, salty junk food, healthy food does have a lighter taste – but healthy food certainly is delicious.

You can find healthier recipes for just about any of your favorite foods – even onion rings, brownies, chili, etc. There are so many healthy cook books and recipes online that you have no excuse for not making healthier foods for you and your family.

These cookies are favorites with my family. You can even stick a few dark chocolate chips on top of each cookie for your kids.

Have Your Guests Bring Dessert

by lisagraham | June 22, 2009 | In Food Comments Off

I’ve already learned that having dessert in my house spells disaster. Unless I make something I don’t like, which is kind of difficult considering we’re talking about dessert!

So when my friend asked what she could bring over for our cookout last night, I told her dessert. There are several pluses to this. 1.) She made it at her house. No being tempted to lick the bowl, the spoon, the container…or test it to make sure it was “okay.” 2.) I could look at it as an outside substance being brought into my house and owned by someone else. I viewed it as hers not mine. 3.) All the dessert leftovers went home with her. No delicious morsels left in my fridge or cupboard to call my name all night.

My second line of defense was to enjoy diet mocha while everyone else slurped and smacked down their ice cream pie and cookies. Thank God for diet hot cocoa mix.
