Today was definitely an I-don’t-feel-like-exercising day. I was tired and had a headache, and dreary rain was falling outside. When my timer went off for me to get up off the couch and get ready for the gym, I groaned.
I turned the timer off, but seriously considered resetting it and crashing back on the couch. However, if I did that I wouldn’t have been able to get in my full workout. I knew I’d be disappointed with myself and my calorie burn. So I dragged on my exercise clothes and herded my kids out the door.
Once I warmed up and got started I felt fine. I got a good workout in after all.
This is something I’ve noticed over and over. I can feel tired, unmotivated, etc., but if I can just get up off the couch and get started, I feel better soon and am ready to get to work.
The hardest part is getting started. The point between leaving the house and getting to the gym. The point between getting ready and getting out the door.
That’s where the mind battle happens.
This mind battle can knock you flat out – right back onto the couch! You have to be prepared for the fight. Don’t be caught off guard by those cozy thoughts: “You’re really tired. You should rest. You don’t have enough time. You can work out extra hard tomorrow.”
Say, “No!” Stick to your guns. Keep with your workout plans. You’ll feel so good about it – and yourself – when your workout is done.
