Exercise When You’re Mad, Sad, or Glad

Exercise is an awesome, positive way to burn off emotions.

Some of my best workouts have been when I was running high on emotions – bad or good. There is restless energy when your emotions are up. This energy needs to be spent – in a healthy way.

When we don’t have a good way to vent, we often end up trying to relieve our emotions through other means. This could result in overeating, treating others unkindly, or restless sleep.

Exercise is especially helpful for dealing with negative emotions, such as anger, disappointment, and stress. Our bodies fill up with stress hormones that leave our muscles tense and our emotions agitated.

An intense exercise session is the answer!

Why does exercise work? During a workout our body burns up those stress hormones and releases other hormones – endorphins. These hormones make us feel good, happy, and relieved.

Just a casual workout probably won’t cut it. You need to exercise hard, work up a good sweat, and keep your heart rate up. You should aim for 45-60 minutes.

Next time your emotions are stirred up, (instead of a jar of PB and a spoon) try a good hard workout!
