Exercise is More than Exercise

I know, it’s a strange title, but I’ll explain shortly. So just hang in there with me.

Sometimes I get flack for being so committed to exercise. There are some people who don’t understand why I run or workout. They think I should skip it for other priorities. Sure, in some cases exercise has to be dropped for the day (like the day after I spent all night in the ER with my mom).

But I would say the people who don’t understand my commitment to exercise aren’t exercisers themselves. They look at exercise as uncomfortable, unpleasant and a waste of time. Or maybe not a waste of time, but not worth the time.

I couldn’t disagree more. To me exercise is more than exercise, movement, action, calorie-burn, etc. To me exercise is life-giving.

Consider this: if someone had to go to physical therapy for recovery from heart surgery, would you ever think about telling them to skip it? Would you consider them fanatical about physical therapy because they never missed an appointment?

Why not? Because it is essential to their good health. Well… do you know how incredibly powerful exercise is in promoting your good health? It strengthens the heart, reduces cholesterol, lowers blood pressure, balances blood sugar, strengthens muscles and bones, slows down aging, reduces the risk of cancer, and the list goes on and on.

The two main reasons people are sick and fat is because: 1.) They eat too much (2. They don’t exercise.

So the next time you want to harp about exercise (or about exercisers like me) do these three things: weigh yourself, look in the mirror sideways, and go get a full physical.
