Don’t Leave Healthy Eating up to Chance

A lady I know of has struggled with her weight for years. She yo-yos up and down, sometimes with drastic weight gains and losses. I saw her friend and asked how she was doing. Her friend said, “She has an eating plan, but I don’t think she’s following it.”

I had to laugh at the oxymoron. “Eating plan” and “not following” are contradicting phrases. Unless you’re following a plan, you have no plan.

I see this all the time with food. People struggle with their weight and say they want to lose weight. They may even start exercising. They may cut out ice cream. But when it comes to their eating plan, they have none. Eating is haphazard. They leave it up to chance and hope for the best.

But hoping you’re doing okay with your food is going to leave you disappointed on the scale. Until you make conscious, deliberate changes with your food (ah, make a plan), you won’t see the results you’re looking for.

One of my clients is “hoping” to lose weight this summer. She wants to get more consistent with her exercise – which is good, sure. But I suggested that she might need to make some changes with her food. “Yeah, maybe,” she said. End of discussion.

If you really want to lose weight, you have to follow a healthy eating plan. There is no shortcut. You have to take the time to plan, prepare, and eat healthy foods. Hoping will get you nowhere.
