Few people can lose weight alone. Even if they know what they should do, it’s hard to do it without someone alongside cheering them on.

If you’re feeling discouraged and frustrated with your weight loss progress (or lack of), try building a weight loss support system. This support could be the key ingredient to your success.

Here are 5 ways to get your weight loss support system in place:

  1. Talk with your family. Your spouse and children, and anyone who lives with you, need to be on the same page. Ask them to support you by keeping temptation foods out of the house, doing fun and healthy activities together, and encouraging you to exercise.
  2. Find a few like-minded friends. Among the people you know, you’ll be able to find at least one or two who are “into” eating right and exercising. Get to know them better and tell them about your efforts.
  3. Join a weight loss group. One of the best things you can do is get in a group of people who are motivated to lose weight. Usually there will be weigh-ins as part of the group and this provides needed accountability.
  4. Plug in to a gym. Don’t go to one where no one talks. Find one where people are friendly and you can feel like part of the gym family. Your gym friends will know when you’re there – and when you’re not.
  5. Hire a personal trainer or dietitian. Get a professional on your side. Not only can he/she help you with the right weight loss knowledge, but this is another great person to have for support and accountability.

  1. I was just telling Mark how much I miss the gym and the atmosphere…I cant seem to get motivated doing this alone. It is so much more fun to exercise and reach goals when you have people there beside you!! I underestimated the support network I had all last year. I will most definitely find a new gym to join when we get resituated…

  2. You are so right! Having support around us is motivating and encouraging. It’s so tough to do it alone. I hope you find a really great gym out there and lots of gym buddies!
